Dear readers,
September marks the beginning of a new school year for you and the students. You know that the beginnings of new experiences are always accompanied by emotions. Some of you are probably thinking that there is nothing new in his long-standing profession, but every school year has proven the opposite.
For a good start, we need a lot of desire for work, the will to give our best, patience and clarity for new challenges.
Rule 21/90
(It takes twenty-one days to form a habit and up to ninety days to make it a permanent lifestyle change.)
Think that students will need 21-90 days to completely change their routine and adapt to the new routine, the one where school is a priority. Give them time.
Create an inviting and friendly environment
The positive climate is an incentive to attend school willingly. For this, on the first day of school, you can put a letter/postcard with a motivational text on the students’ desk. A very small gesture of welcome will give them a lot of warmth and confidence. We all need these.
A little attention and courage would go a long way. Some may be having difficulty adjusting to the new school, teachers or language, so remember that emotional support comes first. For this, you can use methods that focus on working with groups and that can promote socialization.
Plan, organize, communicate
Students do not know your teaching methods, assessment criteria and expectations. Let the students know in the first lessons! You can give each of them a letter with the topics of the projects or with the list of mandatory books for reading, with the deadlines and the objectives they have to achieve. This will help them manage their school life.
School is the space of individual, social and cultural development
Avoid the approach of making schooling a competitive “sport” by focusing on grades. Our culture is plagued by competition in all areas of life. Let’s protect our students’ school experience from this competition by focusing on their gifts and talents and avoiding comparisons with others.
In the end, but a lot starts from here:
Inspire yourself with love, appreciation and enthusiasm for work. This will also be reflected in your classes. I wish you to enjoy the experience of this year and create for yourself and others around you the possibility of beautiful memories.
